Your bird’s accommodation
Many birds are intelligent and inquisitive. Generally, they love interaction with people. However, a bird is very sensitive to stress and therefore a good everyday environment is a definite necessity to make sure your bird will feel at home.
A suitable type of bird cage will depend on the type of bird you have. Logically, a parrot will need a lot more space than a parakeet or a canary.
You can buy special cages for all types of birds, varying from very modest cages to luxurious villas. The size of the cage is very important. Your bird loves to have some space. The bigger the bird, the bigger the cage needs to be. Really big birds, like parrots and cockatoos, like to spend time both in their cage and in your living room.
Always remember that the cage must be a safe place for your bird. For this reason, other pets should not be able to come too close to the bird cage.
The distance between the bars and the thickness of the bars of the cage will also depend on the type of bird you keep. Parrots and other hook-billed birds are very destructive, and thick bars are the only solution to their bills. Thick bars also provide good climbing possibilities. A bird cage must always contain horizontal bars to make sure your bird is able to climb.
The perches in the cage should preferably be made of wood. The bigger the bird, the bigger its perch needs to be.
If your bird feels comfortable in its environment, it will be a happier pet. You will notice that your bird will ask for attention and will seek contact with you.
